Frequently Asked Questions

Are these carrier rates accurate?

Captured from each operator's official international/roaming page as of 2026-05. Carriers update pricing every 6–12 months — verify on your operator's site before traveling. Pay-per-use rates (when destination is outside the daily plan) are typically far higher than shown.

Why is roaming so much more expensive than an eSIM?

Operators set roaming rates at retail multiples of their wholesale cost — they negotiate inter-carrier roaming agreements at $0.10–$0.50/MB and resell to you at $5–$15/MB. eSIM resellers source from the same upstream networks but at much closer to wholesale, then add a thin retail margin.

Can I just pay per MB instead of getting a daily plan?

Technically yes, but it's usually catastrophic. Default per-MB roaming runs $5–$15 — a single Google Maps session can hit $20+. Carriers count on you forgetting to enable a daily plan; the math always favors the daily plan or, even better, an eSIM.

What if my destination isn't in my carrier's daily-plan list?

You fall back to expensive pay-per-use rates. Some carriers (Verizon, AT&T) cap charges with a "throttle to 2G" mode after a daily threshold; others let the meter run. The roaming-calculator highlights this with a ⚠️ warning when the destination falls outside coverage.

Will my carrier charge me for receiving calls and SMS abroad?

Most US/UK carriers do (incoming call $1–$5/min, SMS receive often free). Daily roaming plans typically include unlimited incoming. With an eSIM, you receive calls/SMS on your home line over Wi-Fi calling for free — no roaming charge applies because the eSIM only handles data.

How Carrier Roaming Pricing Works

Why roaming costs $5-15/MB

Mobile operators sign inter-carrier roaming agreements wholesale at $0.10-$0.50/MB. They then resell that data to you at retail rates of $5-$15/MB — a 10x to 50x markup. The markup exists because operators bundle "convenience": you keep your phone number, your same SIM, and don't have to research a foreign carrier. The catch is that the convenience tax is brutal — a single hour of casual phone use can exceed $30 if you forget to enable a daily-pass plan.

EU "Roam Like at Home"

In June 2017 the EU eliminated roaming surcharges between member states. EU citizens traveling within the EU/EEA (27 states + Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein) pay their domestic rate — no separate roaming bill. The regulation includes "fair use" caps that allow operators to flag heavy abusers, but for typical 1-3 week trips, EU citizens roam like at home. Non-EU travelers (US/UK/Asia) still pay regular international rates and benefit more from an eSIM.

Wi-Fi Calling — keep your home number free

Wi-Fi Calling lets your home carrier route voice calls and SMS over a Wi-Fi connection instead of cellular — exactly as if you were home. When you travel, enable it before leaving (Settings → Cellular → Wi-Fi Calling on iPhone; Settings → Network → Wi-Fi Calling on Android). Once connected to any Wi-Fi abroad, you receive calls and 2FA SMS on your home number at zero cost. Combined with a data eSIM, this is the most economical setup for short-to-medium international trips.

Dual-SIM strategy

Modern phones support a physical SIM + an eSIM simultaneously. Keep your home SIM enabled for SMS-based 2FA (banks often refuse to send codes to foreign numbers), but disable cellular data on it (Settings → Cellular → SIM → Cellular Data: Off). Set the eSIM as the default for data. You get bank codes on your home number, internet on the cheap eSIM. Travel cost drops from $50-200/week to $5-15/week.

Expert Tips for Your Trip

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM built into modern smartphones. It lets you activate a mobile data plan by scanning a QR code — no physical SIM card needed.

Which devices support eSIM?

iPhone XS and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, Google Pixel 3 and later, and most recent flagship phones. Check Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM on your device.

Can I make phone calls with the eSIM?

Our eSIM plans provide data only. You can use VoIP apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime, or Skype for voice and video calls over your data connection.

How do I activate the eSIM at my destination?

The eSIM activates automatically when you arrive and enable data roaming in your device settings. Simply install the eSIM before your trip by scanning the QR code, then turn on data roaming when you land.

Can multiple people share one eSIM?

No, each eSIM can only be installed on one device. Please purchase separate plans for each traveler in your group.

What happens when my data runs out?

Your eSIM will stop providing data. You can purchase a new plan on our website and install it on your device to continue using mobile data.

How long is the eSIM valid?

The eSIM must be installed within 6 months of purchase. Once you connect to a network at your destination, the plan duration (e.g. 7 days, 30 days) begins counting down.

What is the refund policy?

Simple rule: if you haven't used it, you can refund it. Not activated → 45-day full refund, any reason. Activated with quality issue → 30-day full refund or free replacement (just describe symptoms, we check logs to resolve). Only non-refundable case: activated and working as described. In case of dispute, PayPal Buyer Protection decides independently (both sides submit evidence). Email [email protected] — response within 24 hours.

What is the difference between eSIM and a physical SIM card?

An eSIM is a digital SIM embedded in your phone — no physical card to swap. You activate it by scanning a QR code. It works as a second line alongside your existing SIM, so you keep your phone number while using local data abroad. Check device compatibility to see if your phone supports eSIM.

How do I set up eSIM on my iPhone?

On iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM > Use QR Code. Point your camera at the QR code we sent to your email. Tap "Add Cellular Plan" and follow the prompts. Before your trip, just enable Data Roaming. See how it works for a step-by-step guide.

Can I install the eSIM before my trip?

Yes, and we highly recommend it! Install the eSIM while you have WiFi. The data plan timer only starts when you connect to a network at your destination — not when you install. Browse our available plans and set up before you fly.

Do I need to remove my physical SIM card?

No! Your eSIM works alongside your physical SIM (dual SIM). Keep your regular SIM for calls and texts, and use the eSIM for affordable mobile data abroad. Check compatible devices that support dual SIM.
